Hi Mom, Everything shipshape and all serene as the first week of this crossing ends. Collectively, I have sailed less than one day without the motor running and have made about 1/3 the distance to Maldives, yet have used up almost half my fuel. Like sailing through a viscous mud, the boat feels sluggish as contrary currents have sucked no less than 200 miles off my 'would be' progress. Pilot ch... [read more]
Hi Mom, I received your email and changed to your new address on my laptop. Tell Jennifer thanks for the email. Hope you are having fun hanging out. I can just imagine all the girl talk. Am finally, after a year and a half, back in a proper ocean, and I must take back what I wrote in the last email about the different seas and oceans all being much the same. They seemed that way at the time ... [read more]
Hi Mom, Arrived ok, it's hot, it's humid, it's all good. If you get a chance watch the movie 'Terminal' with Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones, then you'll get some 'Twilight Zone' idea of how I felt after 39 hours in flights/layovers (plus another 2 hours of bus/taxi/ferryboat). This must sound weird, but after the first 20 hours surviving on terminal and airline food, random sleep periods... [read more]
Hi Mom, Dave and I are off the boat tomorrow traveling overland so will be a few days before the next email. It’s been great having such a good hand around. Our last day in Langkawi Dave and I hiked up a mountain to view the island. On the way down, sweating profusely, we stopped at a swimming hole to soak our tired dogs in the cool pool. A clan of monkeys, about 15 of them, approached us wi... [read more]
Hi mom, Dave and I arrived back in Langkawi/Malaysia and all's well on board; we have completely fallen into old routines of exploring, eating well and socializing with fellow sailors. I am writing with hangover after an evening of celebration in which Dave and I were guests of honor in appreciation of a late night search and rescue. Never try to out drink Germans, especially if they are hosti... [read more]
Hi mom, Everything’s great and I booked my flight home yesterday. I'm coming early as I miscalculated the timing I need to leave to cross the Indian Ocean for Africa, and must leave earlier than expected, by late April. Neil bailed before leaving for the Similans, deciding on a meditation course at another island, some personal quandaries have been making him aloof and he decided what he needed... [read more]
Hi Mom All's well on board mom, I hope the beginning of 2006 has given you that sense of relief I know always comes when the holi-daze are finally over. I feel guilty to have been spared of it this year. Do you feel my pain? Apparently even homesickness has its perks. Well at least the New Year gives you time without yard work, pool cleaning, outdoor chores and the c... [read more]
Hi mom, Sorry I couldn’t make it home for Christmas, hope you had a wonderful holiday. I'm home-sick again and began this email on Christmas Eve when I would gladly have traded the tropics for a cold winter day in Texas. I wouldn’t even mind the consumerism, just as long as I could ostrich my head in your refrigerator and stuff my face on leftovers while sucking down Shiner Bock beer. I ... [read more]
Hi mom, All' well and spending these last overcast weeks in boat projects and yacht racing. I am sure Christmas is in full superfluous-ness-cisity, while here in Buddha-land there is not so much as a hint. I must however admit consumerism is full-on as Phuket is one of the hottest tourist destinations in the world. I’ve been sailing in the post-tsunami region, as you remember occurred just l... Hi mom, All's well, now cruising Thailand with Ricardo, the 26 year old Italian who sailed a part of the coast of Australia with me, nicknamed the 'Italian Stallion'. Ricky returned after 6 months working and trekking Oz, to sail his last weeks of travel after a year wandering the globe. We left Langkawi two days ago and for the first time in months experienced both steady winds and blue water... [read more]
