Hi Mom, An overdue letter. Well to start I hope this email finds you with the Texas summer heat at bay, your garden healthy, and ready for a cool dip in the pool. All well on this side of the globe, a few miles just south of the equator, anchored dead center of the Indian Ocean in a sleepy no-man's atoll called Saloman in the Chagos Archipelago. The atoll is just 4 miles in diameter, with e... [read more]

We've left the Maldives and are headed south to Chagos Islands. Melissa arrived 10 days ago and we cruised the Maldives then provisioned, fueled up and shoved off. All's well and it's great to be underway again. I was getting quite bored and wanderlusty. Between the restrictive cruising of Maldives, the wet, squally weather, and shitty anchorages, I had had enough of boat projects and editing old ... [read more]

Hi Mom, Sorry for the writing blockage. For the first time since leaving Texas I'm having difficulty getting a signal for the server of sailmail. I have now 3 servers to access, one back in Borneo, one in the Red Sea and one in Africa, but it appears I am so far in the middle of no-fuckin-where I cannot reach any of them. So it looks like I will continue writing and send all missives at once wh... [read more]

Hi Mom, All's well on board, except that I'm bored being cooped-up in the boat. The rainy season has begun and though self-entertained in writing, guitar practice, workouts in the abandoned health club, and ping-pong tournaments with resort staff, I'm feeling like a tourist trapped in a gloomy-weather vacation. Feel my pain? The wet season here is an understatement. It's nothing like drizzl... [read more]

Hi Mom, Did you find out about my US Vessel Document renewal from the Coast Guard? I have the info I needed from the bank; you sent it with me. My vessel docs are real important though. I guess it's time I report something, and I wish I could write of some exciting cultural or geographical experiences, but I really have none. If I abuse words of description for ocean like "aquamarine, azure,... [read more]

Hi Mom, I received your email last night and had a glass of red with you. This afternoon arrived and am sitting at anchor, bed is made proper, going to sleep now and clear-in tomorrow. love you, ben ps you know... [read more]

Hi Mom, 19 days now. Not quite a new record for passages, but a new slow for distance. Averaged 82 miles per day, of which 70 have been made good. Global warming again? Perhaps it's due to the Ole Girl being way overloaded with no less than 3 tons of peripheral junk, gear and spares aboard. The waterline has been painted 7 inches higher that when I first bought the tub. I sometimes daydream ... [read more]

Hi Mom, You are more than welcome for the spring cleaning, I enjoyed every minute. Glad you're enjoying the pool. Funny, as a middle-age guy now, I relished the exercise of chores. I certainly never imagined that possible, shirking them as a kid. Thanks for sending the flowers to Janet; everyone says she wrote a great article again. She always makes me out much more of a stud than I feel. Some... [read more]

Hi Mom, Just checking in. All's well, and the currents and fickle light winds still working against Soul progress. This is certainly the slowest passage I have ever made and hardest in the sense of sail work. No heavy work mind you, just constant small sail trimming to get every fraction of a knot speed, then mired in frustration of 20-25% loss of all physical efforts and fuel consumption eaten... Hi Mom, Just a quick one to let you know all's well on board. Approaching Sri Lanka, almost 2/3 the way to Maldives and have made it across the bay of Bengal finally. Still have fuel enough to make it I think. Some winds have set in and have broken past the counter-currents finally. Making reasonable time compared to the last 11 days and should make landfall in perhaps one more week if the win... [read more]
