Hi Mom, Brazil is still treating me well and am now sailing up the coast with a full crew of 6 backpackers from Germany, South Africa, England and Australia. We've had light winds and a lot of motoring, but its only a 4 day trip then all get the boot in Jeri Qua Quara, another little sleepy fishing village come-party-town. My crew are all great kids, ages 22-24 with a variety of backgrounds. I... [read more]

Hi Mom, I hope this email finds you on as beautiful a Texas spring morning as this one in Brazil's Fall. Its true this is equatorial Brazil and the seasons are impotent, but it did rain last night here, a rarity, and though I failed to make in home in time to reap the fresh water into my tanks, the universe seems to have been washed, reminding me of a fresh spring morning back home. I'm still i... [read more]

Hi mom, All well and loving Brazil. Great people, great food, great music, fabulous cultural charm. After a couple weeks getting settled, re-provisioning, and refueling, then a short trip aboard Cisnicito in search of perfect anchorages; I've now rested the ole soul in paradise. Without exaggeration I can estimate that the Gypsy Soul has made 500 or more anchorages over the years, and at l... [read more]

hi mom, just a quick note: I´m sailing the coast of Brazil aboard Cisnicito, a 46 foot swan, then will buss back to gypsy soul, still in Recife city. We found paradise on a two day land trip up the coast, a hidden anchorage, not in any book where i´ll need a local giuide to guide me in. Two Spaniard boats are there, they are the only ones in years to get in, and only because they had a wealthy ... [read more]

Hi Mom, Arrived safe this morning. Back in the WESTERN HEMISPHERE! THE AMERICAS! A cold bottle of Champaign is in the fridge, the one I forgot to drink after rounding the Cape, which somehow seems so long ago. Strange the only interim between Cape Good Hope and Brazil is a little blue pond I practically motored across, the only measurement of time is distance, a few lists of projects, an empty ... Hi Mom, Am at a total loss for words so just a check-in. Two days out of Brazil, Recife, all well on board. Just happened upon a boat in our group, Dream Catcher, John and John, Americans, this morning at dawn, just a white fleck on the horizon abeam. We are a couple miles from each other now and they're standing watch for me. Will email at I arrive Monday, 1-5pm looks like. love ben... [read more]

Another silly saga from a swanky soul. Well I'm getting that feeling of the last person on earth again, like the entirety of Tierra has been swallowed by the ocean. It's been now 20 of the last 22 days I've been at sea, and another week left to go. I've seen not a single ship, nor heard a peep on the VHF, but I am having 'real-time' talks on odd mornings when I remember to get on our radio net ... [read more]

Hi Mom, 'All's well' Am underway again having just spent two days at Saint Helena, British Island, where I picked up some scrawny carrots, white bread, three onions and a few almost rotten apples I considered as 'fresh provisions'. I wouldn't want to make out deprivation on St Helena, the wharf was stacked with crates of fresh vegies, all in quarantine as the supply ship had just arrived. Unfo... [read more]

Hi Mom, Still off the Coast of Africa en route to St Helena and Brazil. I just got an email that it's rainy and cold in central Texas. The Chill of South Africa's Cape area has worn off with 700 miles northing and I find myself windless in the Atlantic, with motor-drone initiating wood refinishing projects and long winded emails. 'Thanks all' for the great Comet M... [read more]

Hi Mom, Off the Cost of Africa en route to Brazil. I'm underway and over my initial couple days of funk that comes with setting off-shore in near gale winds. Am now used to the egg-timer naps and pitching, and have chased down all the little knocks of loose things below decks, and slapping, clonking things topsides. The Gypsy Soul is finally making her ... [read more]
