Hi Mom, all's well got your email, Another semi-rolling email which I'm finishing on the approach to Tobago, it's now 2AM and squally so I have to stay up and watch-sharp for shipping. The egg-timer you gave me goes of every 5 minutes reminding me while I write to go topside and look for lights, there is one ship on the horizon and some high altitude lightening, but no moon whatsoever so the... I'm home Mom, It's equatorial hot, but I'm HOME, and I enjoyed a week of cleaning and fixing shit, something I was altogether sick-of having been on the boat without break since Thailand two birthdays ago. It was a welcome respite these last 4 months to be home in Texas, then off backpacking, it has given me a renewed appreciation for the Ole Girl and a new lease on cruising for this final leg ... Arrived Rio at 5am on a night bus; the sun was still hiding below the horizon, hopped a city bus to famous Copacabana Beach without, as always, living arrangements, and sat in the soft white sand as the sun broke the oceans surface, shattering the difference between night and day. Drunks and Ladies of The Night struggle by homeward, weaving and scampering respectively like inebriated ghosts and un... [read more]

i mom, You know those bamboo trees I brought you with the greatest of intentions, for shade, for garden steaks, for something new and exotic to add to your backyard menagerie? And now it's everywhere, popping up everywhere, impossible to stop, impossible to exterminate, becoming a bane that encroaches on freedom to move around, a barrier fence on the psyche? Well 'pirate fears' are oddly analog... [read more]

Hi mom, all's well in Venezuela. Nice marina, nice beaches, got a week to relax before flying out. Will report more later. Apparently the coast I sailed west alongside is the most notorious pirate waters of the Caribbean (no movie pun intended) but the anchorages have been deserted by sailors for a couple years so no recent boarding's or off shore encounters. I timed the trip to be mostly at ni... [read more]

Under way to Venezuela, about 15 miles off the coast and all's well, it's great to be back on the water, albeit squally/ rainy today. No fish as yet, lots of shipping, no pirates. With fishing lines out, 15 min naps, and 12 gauge loaded, I 'm sure the Ole Girl is the most dangerous boat out here. Should be at anchor this evening, off a small island next to Margarita. Will finish the trip tomorrow ... [read more]

Hi mom and friends, Back on the 'ole tub' for over a week now tinkering, will make sail for Venezuela on Monday or Tuesday, it's less than a 2 day passage. HI, I know none whom read this will sympathize because it all sounds so exotic to be traveling for so long, but this last month was a vacation for me (even the incessant yard work, pool patching and stray cat catching at your house... hi mom, all well and can see Trinidad 5 miles off port beam. As usual it will be difficult to get an email out so near the city, so will call you in a couple days, after getting cleared in and rested...from likely celebratory hangovers. The ole girl and I have entered Galleons Pass between Trinidad and Tobago, officially in the Caribbean now. Woooohooo! Martini shake not stirred with sunset. l... [read more]

Hi mom, I am so looking forward to coming home in a couple weeks and seeing a Texas Summer. The last time I think was 4 years ago after making my way down from Alaska, but that was late summer and this time I will, for the first time in 7 years, be home for the 4th of July. Since the last time home it's been hot as hell everywhere the Old Soul has taken me, with exception of the Cape of Good Ho... [read more]

Hi Mom' I just crossed the equator for the last time, am truly on my side of the world, back in my own hemisphere without a continent in my way. My meandering odyssey has led me 7 times crossing global beltstrap, and in 8 days I'll be in a marina facing the southern Carribbean, my own back yard, only 2500 miles from Texas. Its been 5 years since the ole soul's been so close to home. I left J... [read more]
